How to read this course. BSE 105 (Shadow Grid & Energy Independence) is written for the community’s Energy lead and program manager at the moment planning becomes building. BSE 102 (Household Readiness) taught a household to sustain itself for thirty days; BSE 110 (Shadow Infrastructure Survey & Community Carrying Capacity) taught the community to inventory the capability it already has. This course teaches you to build and operate the capability the survey found wanting: the shadow grid — the generation, storage, and distribution that can island from the macro grid and carry the community’s prioritized loads when the macro grid is gone. You will learn to put load discipline before generation, to survey the dispatchable and variable generation families honestly, to size storage against what the loads actually demand, to understand islanding and the point of interconnection at planning depth, to design black start and restoration sequencing, and to run the operate-maintain-exercise program that turns an installation into a capability. One doctrine governs every page: islanded, not independent. An islanded microgrid is a bounded capability — fuel-limited, maintenance-limited, load-limited — and it is never represented as energy independence in the absolute. Its corollary governs the finish line: exercised, not installed — a shadow grid that has not been exercised under load is an installation, not a capability. And one boundary is load-bearing above all others: this course teaches planning and operations discipline and never instructs electrical work. Design and installation belong to licensed professionals under the National Electrical Code (NEC) and state licensure; interconnection and parallel operation belong to the serving utility’s processes; and the hard doctrine holds without exception — no interconnection or energization outside licensed, utility-authorized work, ever. The capstone seats you with Brayton Mills’s energy team for one build season compressed into an evening — taking the community from its survey to an exercised islanding capability without ever crossing the line that keeps the work lawful, safe, and real.

Written for the community’s Energy lead and program manager, the course teaches what a shadow grid is and is not, how prioritized loads and load discipline come before generation, how the dispatchable and variable generation families and their storage are surveyed and sized honestly, how islanding and the point of interconnection actually work at planning depth, how black start and restoration sequencing are designed, and how the finished system is operated, maintained, and proven by exercise. Before any design, installation, interconnection, or energization decision — engage licensed professionals and the serving utility, and consult your own counsel. Electrical design and installation are licensed professions governed by the National Electrical Code (NEC), state licensure, and local permitting; interconnection and parallel operation with the macro grid are governed by the serving utility’s interconnection processes and tariffs, which vary by state and by utility. This course teaches the shadow grid as curriculum — what the capability is, how it is sized against prioritized loads, how islanding and black start work at planning depth, and how a capability is proven by exercise — and it teaches the discipline of routing every licensed act to the professionals who hold that authority. It provides no engineering services and no legal advice; it authorizes no electrical work of any kind; and no passage in it substitutes for the judgment of the licensed engineer, the licensed electrician, the serving utility, or the counsel retained by the parties in a real project. The hard doctrine is absolute: no interconnection or energization outside licensed, utility-authorized work, ever.
